Columbia Store Manager retires after 21 years

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -  Many leadership roles require an employee to move, but Ray Mathews has been the store manager at the Columbia Walmart since 1993. He decided to step down to travel with his wife and work on his paintings. Typically store managers are asked to move around, but Mathews requested to remain in Columbia.

“I moved 13 times before I came here and when I got to Columbia I loved the city I loved the people and as long as you are doing your job and doing it OK the company will let you stay so I just stayed for the last 21 years,” says Mathews. “I'll still live in Columbia and I'll probably be in Walmart every day.”

Mathew's soon-to-be former employees gave him a farewell party in the store featuring food, several gifts, a cake, and plenty of hugs and hand-shakes. Mathews says, “They went to a lot of trouble, and I wish they hadn't have, but it was very humbling and I appreciated it so so much. It was a lot of fun.”
