Local heroes rescue dog from Hattiesburg house fire

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A house fire on the 100 block of Broad Street occurred after noon on Wednesday.

All occupants were evacuated safely.

One canine suffering from smoke inhalation was removed from the building and resuscitated on the scene. Members from the fire department and power crew worked tirelessly, giving the animal water and oxygen. The canine was then taken to a local animal emergency facility.

Since the incident, Sam the dog has remained in critical condition. She is suffering from pulmonary edema and carbon monoxide toxicity.

The family is unable to pay for Sam's treatment and are asking for help. To donate, click here and in the comments section, please type "save Sam."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears that a moving truck pulled down a utility line, sparking the fire. One of the apartment units sustained fire damage, while the other two units were damaged by smoke.
