WAYNE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Wayne County Sheriff's Department has a new addition to the force.
Five-year-old Alex, a Dutch Shepherd was given to the department by the South Mississippi Narcotics Task Force.
Investigator Jamey Beard and the K-9 officer were certified Saturday during a training course put on by the Laurel Police Department. Beard said he and Alex will continue to train 16 hours a month.
"He's done great," said Beard. "We've used him on a few details; we used him today he performed good when we used him. We're also going to be assisting the Wayne County School District greatly with narcotics detection inside our school system, vehicles in the parking lot, you'll see a lot of K-9 presence on the campuses."
Alex is the only K-9 officer the Wayne County Sheriff's Department has.
