Local veteran honored by White House

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

A surprise birthday party in Laurel ended with a proclamation and a special message all the way from the White House.

Family and friends filled the Pendorff Community Center to honor Harvey Warren on his 70th birthday.

He received a special message from United States Congressman Steven Palazzo, Governor Phil Bryant as well as President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee presented Warren with a proclamation for his bravery and service in the Vietnam war.

"He gave selflessly, he saved people's lives, putting his own life in danger, and that's the kind of person he is," said Magee. "I could not pass up the opportunity to recognize him today."

Magee said Warren was a key player in his election into the city council years ago.

"Harvey warren is a friend of mine," said Magee."He's been a friend to Laurel, he's been a friend to Jones County, to the community. He does everything he can to help the community."

Warren is a war veteran, newspaper columnist and Jones County District 5 employee.
