East Jones students help out Southern Cross Animal Rescue

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

More than fifty fourth, fifth, and six graders from the East Jones student council were at the Southern Cross Animal Rescue shelter Friday afternoon helping out.

They were first given a tour of the shelter and then spent more than an hour tidying up the facility. While some students raked leaves, others washed walls, filled and cleaned water bowls, and picked up trash.

Besides volunteering, the students gave the shelter a large quantity of dog and cat food for the animals at the shelter. They also donated $500 that they had raised in the recent Pennies for Pets campaign.

"To have these kids do this shows their compassion for the animals," said Cindy Renz, SCAR. "All of them are animal lovers and it gives them a chance to help out in the community."

Several of the students expressed a desire to return in the future to volunteer some more.
