ELLISVILLE – Jason Smith threw three touchdown passes and Tevaris McCormick accounted for 208 yards of offense and two scores as the 4th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community Bulldogs whipped 6th-rated Jones County Junior College 42-3 here Thursday night.
The Bulldogs outgained the Bobcats 484-153 in total yards as they improved to 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the MACJC South Division. JCJC fell to 4-1 and 2-1.
Next up, the Bobcats will go on the road to face top-ranked East Mississippi in a 2 p.m. game on Oct. 4.
MGCCC will host Southwest Mississippi on Oct. 2.
McCormick rushed eight times for 142 yards and had four pass receptions for 66 yards. Smith, an Auburn commitment, had scoring strikes of 19 yards to McCormick, 11 yards to Tyrone Williams and 26 yards to Jamaar Cole.
MGCCC finished with 20 first downs, compared to seven for JCJC.
Rodregus Ducksworth had five receptions for 81 yards for the Bobcats.
The Bulldogs scored on their second possession when they drove 58 yards in nine plays. Smith found McCormick from 19 yards away on a third and 11 play. Tristan Reynolds' extra point made it 7-0 with 5:42 left in the first quarter.
MGCCC would later put together a 70-yard, three-play drive. Chris Robinson scored on a 6-yard run and Reynolds added the conversion to make it 14-0 with 13:48 left in the second quarter. A 52-yard pass from Smith to Williams was the key play of the drive.
The Bulldogs' defense set up the next score when James Graves recovered a Bobcat fumble at his own 43.
On the next play, McCormick took a handoff on a reverse, cut back across the field and raced 57 yards for a touchdown. Reynolds kicked the extra point and MGCCC led 21-0 with 10:09 left in the first half.
The Bobcats would score their only points of the game on the next drive.
Tevin Moore took the kickoff and returned it 38 yards to his own 41-yard line. Quarterback Steven Swindle connected with Ducksworth on a 28-yard pass that gave the Bobcats a first down at the MGCCC 35. The drive would stall and Cole Byrd would boot a 45-yard field goal at the 8:01 mark to make it 21-3.
But MGCCC took the ensuing kickoff and marched 91 yards in nine plays. Smith hit Williams from 11 yards out, Reynolds kicked the extra point and the Bulldogs were up 28-3 with 3:43 left in the first half.
The Bulldogs added to the lead on its second possession of the second half when they drove 54 yards in six plays. Smith would score on a keeper from 3 yards out. Reynolds made the conversion and MGCCC led 35-3 with 10:42 remaining in the third quarter.
MGCCC ended the scoring when they marched 80 yards in six plays. Smith connected with Cole on a 26-yard touchdown pass to end the drive with 33.9 seconds left in the third quarter. Reynolds added the extra point.
