Suspect identified in Perry County shooting death

PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

One person is dead and another is in custody in connection with a morning shooting in Perry County.

James Hartfield, 52, of McLain was pronounced dead at the scene according to Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith.

Byron Armstrong, 24, was taken into custody in connection with the shooting death of Hartfield.

Smith stated that deputies received a call of an auto burglary in progress at 91954 U.S. 98 about three miles east of Beaumont shortly before 11:00 a.m. While responding another call was received that a person had been shot. According to Smith, Armstrong lived at the residence where the incident occurred.

When asked was this a scene of self defense or if there was another motive for the shooting, Smith stated.

"It's going to depend on the investigation at this time and what comes of it."

Smith noted that the investigation is still ongoing.

Mississippi Highway Patrol units along with members of the U.S. Forrest Service responded with their K-9 unit to assist with the scene.
