One dead in Perry County shooting

PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

One person is dead and another is in custody for questioning following a morning shooting in Perry County.

James Hartfield, 52, of McLain was pronounced dead at the scene according to Perry County Sheriff Jimmy Dale Smith.

Smith stated that deputies received a call of an auto burglary in progress at 91954 U.S. 98 about three miles east of Beaumont shortly before 11:00 a.m. While responding another call was received that a person had been shot.

According to Smith one person was taken in to custody and is being held for investigation purposes at this time.

When asked was this a scene of self defense or if there was another motive for the shooting, Smith stated.

 "It's going to depend on the investigation at this time and what comes of it."

Mississippi Highway Patrol units along with members of the U.S. Forrest Service responded with their K-9 unit to assist with the scene.
