Purvis teen recovering after hit-and-run, police searching for suspect

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Purvis High School senior is home recovering after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday evening on Beaver Lake Road.

Maverick Johnson, 17, was running near his house when an unidentified vehicle left him in the road around 7 p.m.

Johnson's mother said he suffered a concussion, which has affected his short term memory. He also received a number of stitches and has significant scrapes on his face, head, hands and legs. Luckily, he did not suffer any broken bones or internal bleeding.

Sheriff Danny Rigel and Johnson's mother both said that there was a downpour of rain around the time Johnson was struck, and he was found in the road near Club House Drive by a passerby.

Rigel said any information will help in identifying who struck Johnson, and those with tips should call the Lamar County Sheriff's Department at 601-794-8610.

Johnson is a multi-sport athlete for Purvis High School, and his mom said he is a college prospect.
