The City of Hattiesburg is officially recognizing the health benefits of ballroom dancing.

Wednesday, mayor Johnny Dupree issued a proclamation in support of National Ballroom Dance Week, which runs from Sept. 19-28.

Receiving the proclamation were members of the Hattiesburg-Laurel chapter of USA Dance.

That organization is planning several events for National Ballroom Dance Week, including a kick-off dance Saturday night at the Thirsty Hippo from 7-10 p.m.

They have about 75 members.
