HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Friends and family members of a Hattiesburg man who was found shot to death in a drainage ditch this week gathered at the site of his murder to remember him Saturday night. Dozens of people came to the Timberton Softball Complex to light candles and reflect on the life of 20-year-old Johnnie Cooper.

He was found submerged in water in a ditch at the complex by Hattiesburg city workers Thursday.

He had been shot several times.

Two Hattiesburg men, Pedro Alvarez, 28, and V'nell Miskell, 25, have been arrested in connection with Cooper's death.

"We didn't realize he was loved by so many, but it's really been comforting for all of us, to see how many people loved him and to know that he touched all of these people's lives in some way," said Latasha Lewis, Cooper's aunt.

His death was the ninth homicide in the Hub City this year.
