WAYNE COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The Mississippi Department of Transportation held a highway dedication ceremony Wednesday afternoon to honor a World War Two veteran.
A portion of Highway 84 East between West Shady Grove Church Road and Eucutta Road was named in honor of Wayne County native John Lewis 'Louie' Pitts. Pitts served in the army in world war Two and served in a variety of theaters including the second wave of the invasion of Normandy on D-Day.
Pitts was wounded in battle twice during his time of service and earned several medals including the Bronze Star and the Purple heart.
It's a great honor for the family and everyone concerned," said son Travis Pitts. "We are all overjoyed with this honor they have given our father today."
Pitts passed away in April of 2009 at the age of 92.
