Petal City budget means no municipal tax hike

PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Petal City announced the city's new budget for fiscal year 2014-1015. The Friendly City will be keeping it's millage rate at about the same as last year which means this will be the ninth consecutive year that the rate has remained the same. The general fund to operate the city will be about $6.75 million dollars.

Also in the budget, an across the board pay increase for the Petal Police Department. Mayor Hal Marx said that with the city of Petal being voted the safest city in the state of Mississippi, it's a way of recognizing their efforts.

"We are able to give our police officers a $2,000 across the board raise, we are also able to give department heads a raise," said Marx, "And we're able to meet all the needs of our departments so we feel like we got a good budget to work with in the upcoming year."

In the budget, the City Works department will be able to purchase a new dump truck and a new mower to cut the grass along the Evelyn Gandy Parkway.

The city will also begin paving about nine miles of roads throughout the city which will start sometime this fall.
