AmeriCorps, Volunteer Hattiesburg honor HPD with car wash

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A group of AmeriCorps volunteers and the Volunteer Hattiesburg organization honored Hub City police officers by washing police cruisers and HPD's Mobile Command Unit Tuesday.

It was done to get vehicles ready for an annual 9/11 memorial on Thursday.

Wednesday, the volunteers will wash Hattiesburg Fire Dept. trucks at the No.1 station downtown.

They will also assist with the memorial service Thursday.

"Giving back to the first responders is really great, I feel like they do so much for our country," said Rachelle McClellen, a volunteer from Missouri.

"It feels good to give back to the men and women that risk their lives everyday to make sure we are safe," said Edward Rich, another volunteer from Montana.

The AmeriCorps group has been in the Hub City for about nine weeks and will be leaving following the 9/11 memorial service.
