Southern Miss athletics news release
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returned to the outdoors for its practice here Wednesday, but the weather got the Golden Eagles late during their session, cutting it a bit short at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
The weather, which played havoc with the team's schedule on Tuesday that forced them inside, was good enough to get through most of its session on this day, but did get bad towards the end of the workout.
"We got to actually go out (today)," said Southern Miss coach Todd Monken. "We had to cut it a little short because of lightning, but we went full pads today because yesterday was indoors. It was a little humid out there so our guys had to fight through it and they did a good job."
The Golden Eagles are getting ready for their home opener this week against Alcorn State, which will start at 6 p.m., this Saturday at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at Roberts Stadium. Heading into the second contest, Monken said that there was not going to be much change to the team's depth chart.
"Not anything has changed much," said Monken of the depth chart. "It is hard to make any drastic changes when you play the quality opponent that we did. I am the first one to overreact, but you have to be careful in overreacting.
"Had we played a weaker opponent, you don't want to get too high on something that you saw. It takes a larger sample size to make decisions."
One thing Monken was positive on following practice on Wednesday was the play of its defensive line, which collected three sacks against the Bulldogs.
"I thought across the board one of our bright spots was our defensive line," said Monken. "I felt like they held their own. I felt like when they had to throw, I thought we got pressure. I thought our guys played with energy. I know they are capable of that. I don't think it was a surprise, I just think that it was fun to watch them play and have fun because it starts there."
The Golden Eagles will continue to get ready for the Braves with a Thursday afternoon practice.
On Saturday, there will be a fireworks show as well as a reunion for the 1999 Conference USA Championship team, which will celebrate its 15th anniversary during the game. At halftime, the Pride of Mississippi and the Alcorn State Band will both perform.
