HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg-area CVS Pharmacies are joining thousands of others across the country which are no longer selling cigarettes and tobacco products.

Stores across the nation stopped tobacco sales Wednesday, about one month earlier than a previously-announced ban of Oct. 1.

The company posted signs at stores referencing the ban that read "Let's Quit Together."

CVS has about 7,700 retail pharmacies and was the first major drug store chain to announce the suspension of tobacco sales.

The company estimated it could lose about $2 billion in annual sales. In 2013, CVS had $126 billion in revenue.
