Plea deal being discussed for Laurel teacher charged in Rose Cochran photo case

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The attorney for a Laurel man accused of plotting to photograph Senator Thad Cochran's bedridden wife said there could be a possibility of a plea deal, but no resolution has been met.

"There is nothing going on right now," said Tom Fortner, Richard Sager's attorney. "We are having discussions. No resolution at this time, no court date set."

According to Fortner, the next thing that would happen would be to present evidence to a grand jury unless an agreement is reached before then.

District Attorney Michael Guest said plea negotiations with Sager have reached an impasse.

"His case will be presented to the grand jury," said Guest. "The grand jury will determine what charges if any that indictments should be returned."

Sager has been charged with conspiracy and evidence tampering.

If convicted, Sager could face up to seven years in prison and $8,000 in fines.

Others involved included John Mary who pleaded guilty last month to conspiracy. Authorities said the fourth defendant, Ridgeland attorney Mark Mayfield, killed himself.

All four supported Cochran's challenger, state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

McDaniel has said he and his campaign had nothing to do with the incident.
