CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Canton Public School District says that it is continuing to work diligently to contain the spread of scabies at several of its schools.

In a new release from Superintendent Ike Haynes says the district has taken, and will continue to take, every measure possible to keep students safe.

"I want to reassure parents and students that crews have worked diligently to thoroughly deep clean and disinfect all schools, school cafeterias, and school buses, to prevent any additional cases of scabies. So far, we have 15 reported cases of scabies."

"I want to thank our maintenance department for working around the clock over the Labor Day Holiday to sanitize all of our facilities to ensure our students' safety. We are asking parents to continue to monitor their children and if they develop any symptoms please seek medical attention and keep school officials informed."

Again our students' safety is our top priority and we continue working to make sure they stay safe while in our care."

The school district says they have informed parents that their children may have recently been exposed.

They say teachers are also making sure students increase hand washing.
