HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hercules, Inc. this week will begin replacing a sewer line beneath a street that runs along the east side of the plant. The work on Providence Street has been ordered by the Mississippi Dept. of Environmental Quality, based on sampling in the sewer that was done four years ago.

The work is expected to last several weeks and will affect the use of about 1,500 feet of the road.

Hercules has submitted a plan to MDEQ and the EPA to manage any contaminated soil or groundwater that may found during the work. The plan also contains procedures for air monitoring.

The work will be overseen by the City of Hattiesburg.

Ashland, the parent company of Hercules, closed the plant five years ago.
