KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

Update, 8/30/14:

The driver of the pickup, Donald Porter, 50, of Kingsport, died as a result of his injuries Saturday morning, according to Kingsport police.  The investigation into the accident by K.P.D. Traffic Unit is ongoing.

Original story, 8/30/14:

One person is in critical condition after a car accident in Kingsport.

According to officers, it happened around 9:30 Friday night at the intersection of Eastman Road and East Center Street.

Police told News Channel 11, Brittany Pearce, 19, of Kingsport, was driving northbound on Eastman Road preparing to go straight through the intersection. Meanwhile, a driver in a 1986 Chevrolet pickup was southbound on Eastman Road and made a left turn directly into the path of Pearce.

Witnesses told police both vehicles had a green light as they approached the intersection, and that the lights had changed from green to yellow just before the accident.

Kingsport police said the two cars subsequently crashed and the driver of the pickup, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected.

According to police, both drivers were taken to the hospital. Pearce has non-life threatening injuries.  However, the pickup driver's injuries are life threatening and he is listed in critical condition.  His name is not being released until his family has been notified, but we do know he is a 50-year-old from Kingsport.

Police continue to investigate the crash and said that seatbelts would likely have had a significant bearing in the outcome of the accident. Officers said, "the Kingsport Police Department continues to stress the importance of the wearing of seatbelts. Not only is it the law, but it might just save a life."
