HPD recognize restaurants with P.A.L. awards

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg Police Department awarded O'Charley's and The Front Porch Buffet with plaques for their community support in its Police Athletic Program (P.A.L.).

"We wanted to let these folks know that we appreciate what they have done for us in this program," HPD Captain Ricky Myers said. "It's basically a community support award. We have different facets of donations that people can make, it can be monetary donations at certain levels, it can be an in-kind donation as it relates to volunteers, and what we try to do is show appreciation and give them some token to let them know that we appreciate what they are doing for us and the community."

The P.A.L. program has offered summer camps for community kids since 2009. These camps are overseen by police officers and volunteers who play basketball, football, swimming and bowling with the children.

According to Capt. Myers, the camp is to develop a better relationship between law enforcement and youth and to teach youth about developing positive life skills through sports.
