Port of Gulfport dredging to start next week

The Army Corps of Engineers and its contractor will mobilize at the Port of Gulfport next week to begin the long awaited channel dredging project.

Port Director Jonathan Daniels made that announcement at Thursday's port authority board meeting. He told commissioners it's certainly good news for the port and will allow Gulfport to attract additional tonnage to the facility.

The channel will be dredged to a full 36 feet and possibly up to 38 feet with the over dredging that typically occurs.

Daniels said not only will the new channel help with recruiting new business, but it will also aid existing tenants like DuPont, which has been hindered somewhat by the channel not being fully dredged.
