Teen murder suspects appear in court

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A Columbus detective testified several guns were found inside a car where a 16-year-old was found dead.

Jamal Scott, 15,  and 14-year-old Jaquan Harris were in Recorders Court on Tuesday, Aug. 26, to face charges in the shooting death of Christopher Jones.

The two teens entered a plea of not guilty to charges including aggravated assault and murder.

A detective testified that both suspects were involved in a series of crimes. He said there were guns taken from residential burglaries. Harris removed the magazine from one of the guns and handed the gun to 18-year-old Terrance Streeter. Streeter looked at the gun, and gave it back to Harris. Harris then put the magazine back in the gun, and Streeter grabbed the .40 caliber handgun, attempting to steal it.

There were numerous shell casings recovered from the scene. The detective says there were shell casings found inside and outside the vehicle, as well as bullets that were fired from outside of the car moving into the car.

A number of guns were recovered from the scene, including a .40 caliber and .25 caliber handgun, and AK-47, and a .380 semi-automatic. It appears the juveniles attempted to use the AK-47, but did not know how. It did no appear to have been fired.

Both were given a total bond of more than $100,000 each, but were denied bond for the murder charge. According to State Bill 440, juveniles accused of murder may be charged as adults.
