Southern Pines enters home stretch in ASPCA 100 K Challenge

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Southern Pines Animal Shelter is in it's final big push in the Rachael Ray ASPCA 100 K Challenge.

For the past three months SPAS is one of 50-shelters from across the country competing in the challenge. At the beginning of the challenge they set a goal of saving 1500-lives during the months of June, July, and August which would double what they did during the same period last year. As of Tuesday they were ay around 1300.

During the remaining week they have a lot of adoption specials planned to include a big event this weekend where there goal is to empty the entire shelter of all the animals.

"We looking at somewhere around 60 animals that have had their adoption fee sponsored and several others with reduced fee adoptions," said Ginny Sims, SPAS manager. "We're calling out to the community to people who are looking to be involved with the challenge, but maybe can't adopt, but still want to help."

Sims says folks can sponsor animals for $100. I interested contact the shelter at 601-544-6632 or go to the Southern Pines Facebook page.

Sims added it would be a beautiful way to end the challenge if they would be able to have an empty shelter by the end of the weekend.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
