Hattiesburg murder suspect in custody

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A murder suspect is in custody after a weekend murder of a Hattiesburg woman.

According to Hattiesburg police Shelvin Lanell Jones, 38, was taken into custody early Tuesday morning in the Palmer's Crossing area for the murder of Eboni Newsome, 22.

According to Hattiesburg police they received a tip that Jones was in the Palmer's Crossing area and located him.

Newsome died from what appears to be injuries she sustained in an aggravated assault according to Lamar County Deputy Coroner Andy Geske. Geske also stated the body will be sent to the Mississippi State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

Hattiesburg police received a call of a woman laying in the roadway in the 500 block of Cox Street in the Palmer's Crossing area in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Upon arrival they found Newsome who was suffering from numerous contusions and injuries.

She was transported from the scene to Wesley Medical Center where she passed away Sunday morning.

Newsome's death was the second homicide of the weekend, and the eighth of the year in Hattiesburg.
