HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The first phase of a new multi-neighborhood recreational area in Hattiesburg is now officially complete. A ribbon was cut at a new bridge at Town Square Park Thursday afternoon to open the Downtown District-Phase One of the Gordon's Creek Linear Park.
It follows Gordon's Creek from Kamper Park to the Leaf River and is 3.5 miles long.
Phase One was funded by two grants totalling about $727,000.
"Well, everybody knows the heart of the city is downtown and we continue to develop that and make people want to come to downtown, want to invest in downtown, want to live in downtown," said Johnny Dupree, mayor of Hattiesburg.
The City of Hattiesburg Thursday also unveiled a new, $60,000 permanent stage at Town Square Park.
The first act to perform on it was local blues legend Tommy "T-Bone" Pruitt.
