Man charged with aggravated assault against HPD officers

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg police received a call at 4 p.m.Thursday afternoon from the Jr. Food Mart on the corner of West 4th Street and Main Street where a man was harassing customers at gas pumps, according to HPD.

When the officers arrived and began speaking with the suspect, Eric Peyton, he started to assault the officers, according to Lt. Jon Traxler.

Peyton then ran away from the officers on foot into a nearby wooded area, according to Traxler.

Traxler said the officers were able to catch up with Peyton where he once again attacked the officers.

Peyton was then subdued and taken into custody.

Everyone involved in the incident were transported to the hospital to be checked for injuries, according to Traxler. No injuries have been reported.

Peyton faces two counts of aggravated assault in addition to the warrants out for his arrest from the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
