DARWIN, AUSTRALIA (RNN) – A rare albino crocodile lurking in Australia's Adelaide River attacked and killed a fisherman in front of his wife on Monday afternoon.

The incident happened on a fishing trip for the couple at the Kakadu National Park in Australia's Northern Territory. The couple were in a boat on the water's edge, near other tourist's boats.

The albino saltwater crocodile, known to locals as "Michael Jackson," reportedly ripped the 57-year-old fisherman out of his boat when he attempted to free his tangled fishing line in the water. On Monday night, recovery crews found the man's body and the 14-foot crocodile, killing him.

Northern Territory Police Duty Superintendent Jo Foley told the Associated Press that the man's wife didn't see the take down, but heard “a scream” and saw “a tail splashing in the water.”

The crocodile has been a nuisance and beast of legend in Australia's Northern Territory. A video posted on YouTube in 2012 allegedly shows the rare animal lurking in the same waters.

"If a crocodile attacks someone, particularly at a place where there's a lot of tourism, and with people using boat ramps, it makes it more dangerous because that croc has figured out it can take someone and is more likely to try it again," Charles Darwin University crocodile researcher Adam Britton told The Sydney Morning Herald.

Britton also told the Australian Broadcasting Company that "Michael Jackson" has "been in some wars," and had missing limbs and bite marks on his body. 

The species became protected in 1971 and the animal population has boomed in Australia. The Adelaide River is a hot spot for crocodiles, and hosts tourist visits from the Original Adelaide River Queen Jumping Crocodile Cruises, where boats hang strings of meat from their vessels just to catch a glimpse of them.

A tour director said that “Michael Jackson was one in a million” and a big hit for sightseers.

This is not the first crocodile-related attack in Australia in the last year. A 12-year-old boy and another fisherman were killed by crocodiles in the same area, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
