Handcuffed DUI suspect runs from deputy, leaves child behind

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Jones County man awaits his court date after he ran away from police and left his child behind. The entire thing was caught on dash cam video.

After receiving a call about an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle Sunday night, the Jones County Sheriff's Department came across a vehicle that matched the description. Aside from that, deputies said the driver was also pulled over for careless driving.

According to deputies, the driver had his child with him. The vehicle he was driving belonged to his 5-year-olds mother. Deputy Cheston Cannon had the man take a breathalyzer test and according to the department, the portable machine determined the man's blood alcohol concentration was .147, that's almost double the legal limit which is 0.08.

The Jones County man ran from the deputy and got away, leaving his child behind. According to deputies, the mother was immediately called afterwards and arrived to pick up her little boy.

Deputies said the man walked into the department with his handcuffs on Monday and turned himself in. He was charged with DUI with child in vehicle. According to deputies, the man was remorseful for what he had done.
