SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -

Rescue crews save an elderly woman who was trapped inside a flooded minivan.

It happened near 153rd Avenue and Jomax Road after a quick but powerful storm.

William Hensley said he and his wife Shirley Hensley were on their way to Costco when they came across a flooded-out wash.

"It was my own stupidity. I've been out here 16 years. I've been through the washes but I had no idea. When I looked at it, it didn't look that bad, you know," said William Hensley.

William Hensley says he thought their minivan could make it, but they quickly got into trouble.

"The whole front end went down into the water. The water was rushing over the top of the hood," said William Hensley. "It was like a toy bobbling in water."

William Hensley was able to get out, but Shirley Hensley was trapped.

"I climbed out the window onto the ground and I grabbed her arms and told her to come on but she's almost 80 and she's not that strong, and I could not pull her," said William Hensley.

A Maricopa County Sheriff's Department helicopter made an emergency landing. Crews anchored a line and managed to pull Shirley Hensley to safety.

Their granddaughter Taylor Woods said she wasn't sure her grandma would make it.

"It was definitely shocking. I was panicking. It was very scary," said Woods.

Woods says her grandma will be OK.

"She's got a couple of bruises. We wanted to send her to the hospital but she didn't want to go. She says she's fine, she just shaken up. And she's in shock. She can't believe what happened," said Woods.
