LONGMONT, CO (KUSA/CNN) - A decorated World War II veteran receives a special honor after waiting 70 years.

Henry "Hank" Werner was awarded his high school diploma on Monday at Silver Creek High school in Longmont, CO.

His daughter and granddaughter were on hand for the special ceremony.

Werner was supposed to graduate in 1944, when he was 17. Instead, he left school two months early to complete basic training with the Army, before heading off to fight in World War II.

Werner said he was speechless after receiving his special honor today.
