MONROVIA, LIBERIA (AVN/NHK/CNN) - A new facility for treating people infected with Ebola has been set up in the Liberian capital, Monrovia.

The Ebola epidemic is spreading in West Africa; 1,145 people have died. Liberia is one of the worst-affected nations.

The world health organization and local authorities established the new treatment center. It has more than 50 beds and is staffed around the clock with local doctors and nurses.

An NHK television crew visited the facility on Sunday, one day before its opening. The staff were making final preparations, including room disinfection.

Many of the staff volunteered, in contrast to doctors who left other medical facilities because they were afraid of contracting Ebola.

One of the doctors at the new center says the staff decided to work there as it is all they can do to contain the Ebola outbreak.

A Japanese doctor, Yasuyuki Kato, of the National Center for Global Health and medicine is working at the new facility as a World Health Organization expert.

Kato said the new center will soon be filled to capacity as more than 30 new cases are discovered in the city every day. He called for international assistance to deal with the growing number of patients.
