PETAL, MS (WDAM) - The city of Petal unveiled plans to build a recreational bike park located on city owned property adjacent to the Leaf River and across from Chain Park at Twin Forks.
The park will feature mountain bike trails, cyclo-cross trails and a BMX pump track. The work is expected to start sometime in September, 2014.
The bike trails will be managed cooperatively by the City of Petal Parks and Recreation Department, all recreational user groups and trail partners for the benefit and enjoyment of Petal residents.
The first stage of the project will consist of clearing vegetation for the trail corridor while maintaining a rustic, natural trail surface.
The trail will then be laid out along with drainage, mounds and berms . In all, the bike trail will consist of 2.17 mile
Plans are to leave as many trees as possible for aesthetic purposes and hopefully add an archery range and disc-golf course.
However, since the property is located on a floodplain, no permanent structures will be allowed to be built. It is hoped that in the future, the bike trails will be connected to the Longleaf Trace.
