(RNN) - Oscar-winning actor and comedian Robin Williams was found hanged, according to the Lt. Keith Boyd, the assistant deputy chief coroner in Marin County, CA.

According to a news release issued by the Marin County, CA, Sheriff's Office, his body was found on Monday at about 11:55 a.m. He was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m. PT. by firefighters.

The official cause of death is asphyxia due to hanging. Toxicology results, which would determine if Williams had taken drugs or alcohol, will not be available for four to six weeks. Boyd would not comment on whether or not a note was found at the scene.

Boyd says Williams was last seen around 10 p.m. on Aug. 10 by his wife, Susan Schneider, who then went to bed. She then left the home the next morning and assumed Williams was still in bed asleep in a different bedroom.

A personal assistant then came to the home and found Williams with a belt around his neck. Superficial cuts were found on his left wrist and a pocket knife was found nearby. Boyd could not confirm if the blood found on the blade was the actor's.

Williams had battled severe depression and in July had checked himself into rehab to maintain sobriety. He had been sober, and he wanted to maintain that sobriety.

The 63-year-old actor, who studied at Julliard, was open about his trouble addiction by putting them in his stand-up routines, and often discussing them in interviews.

As the news broke, fans placed flowers outside his home and on his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
