Six new officers sworn in to Hattiesburg Police Department

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Six new Hattiesburg Police Officers were sworn in Monday morning by Mayor Johnny Dupree.

All six come from other departments and bring a total of around 35-years of experience to the force. With the addition of the new officers Hattiesburg has a total of 116. The department is authorized to have 140.

The new officers will undergo a three-week refresher course at the training academy and then will go through a month long training period with a field training officer to get familiar with the city.

"With them being already trained and having years of experience they don't have to go through the three month training phase like a new recruit does," said Lt. Jon Traxler, HPD, PIO. We can get them on the streets quicker. They have the experience of how to deal with people as opposed to the new recruits who are fresh out of the academy."

A new academy training class is starting in the near future.
