Soldier found dead at Fort Gordon identified

FORT GORDON, GA (WFXG) -

The Fort Gordon soldier that was found dead on post Friday has been identified.

2nd Lt. Anthony Thomas Scardino, 27, was found dead after going missing during land navigation training in the post's training area, officials said in a press release. His body was found around 10 p.m. Friday night.

Scardino was a member of the Mississippi Army National Guard, officials said, but was temporarily assigned to the 442nd Signal Battalion, 15th Regimental Signal Brigade at Fort Gordon for training in the Signal Basic Officer Leadership course. He joined the military in 2003. He was deployed to Iraq in 2006 and Afghanistan in 2009.

During his military career, Scardino received the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Mississippi War Medal, the Mississippi Emergency Service Medal and the Parachutists Badge.

More than 90 soldiers and the post's emergency services were on a search team to find the soldier after he failed to arrive at a designated location Friday afternoon.

Officials said the circumstances around his death are still being investigated.
