Wiggins hosts highway dedication ceremony

WIGGINS, MS (WDAM) - -

The Mississippi department of Transportation (MDOT)'s Southern Transportation Commissioner Tom King held a highway dedication ceremony on Friday. The ceremony was at 3:30 pm at the Ferris O'Neal Senior Center at 1240 magnolia Drive in Wiggins.

A section of U.S. Highway 26 in Wiggins as "Bond-Breland-Fite Memorial Highway." The Highway 26 designation begins at the intersection of First Street extending east to the city limits of Wiggins.

"MDOT is honored to dedicate this section of highway as the Bond-Breland-Fite Memorial Highway," Commissioner King said.  "This memorial will remind all of us who travel this section of highway in Wiggins of the dangers our police officers face every day."

The Mississippi Legislature unanimously approved to designate this section in honor of three Wiggins police officers; Henry Lee Bond, Odell Fite and Brandon Breland.  All three Police officers were killed while on duty.  Henry Bond, a father of nine who was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute in 1969. Odell Fite and Brandon Breland were killed when they responded to a domestic dispute in 2005.

MDOT will maintain appropriate signs on this section of the highway in memory of the three police officers.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.

    A man is recovering from injuries after he claims he was beaten by officers with the Laurel Police Department. Thirty-six-year-old James Barnett indicated the incident took place on Tuesday, May 15.
