HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - August 7 is recognized nationally as Purple Heart Day.
In honor of Purple Heart recipients, Mayor Johnny DuPree signed a proclamation declaring Hattiesburg a Purple Heart city. Members of the Military Order of the Purple Heart gathered Thursday at The Front Porch and said they are honored the city recognizes combat wounded veterans.
"It means a lot because it shows that the local community cares about us also as much as we care for them," said Commander of the Department of Mississippi James Barry.
The Military Order of the Purple Hearts began in 1932. It is composed of men and women who have received the Purple Heart medal for wounds suffered in combat.
