Two charged in Jones County theft

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Two people were arrested on Wednesday in connection with stealing timber from a 16-section land.

Willie Nichols, 33, and 29-year old Amanda Nichols are charged with stealing the timber.

The crime took place on Scarborough Road near Ovett in Jones County, MS.

The couple's activities was brought to the attention of the Mississippi Forestry Commission by a tip from a local resident that contacted Tommy Parker, Superintendent of Education for the Jones County School District.

Parker advised that there were no authorized cuts taking place in the area and then he contacted the Jones County Sheriff's Department.

Through further investigation, deputies were able to locate Mr. and Mrs. Nichols who admitted to cutting the timber.

The couple cut nearly two acres of trees worth roughly $2,000 before being caught. They were both charged with one count each with Timber Stealing and  fined $5,000 a piece.

If convicted, they could face up to five years in prison. A timber skidder used in collection of the trees was also seized by Jones County authorities.
