(CNN) - For the first time, millennials have zoomed passed their Generation X counterparts when it comes to buying new cars.

Millennials born between 1977 and 1994, also known as Generation Y, bought 26 percent of new vehicles sold so far this year.

That's according to a new report by J.D. Power and Associates.

Gen X shoppers, born between 1965 and 1976, accounted for only 24 percent of sales.

Both groups are still getting lapped by the baby boomer generation, those born between 1946 and 1964. They soaked up 38 percent of new cars and trucks sold during the first half of the year.
