JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Two people were arrested Wednesday in connection with stealing timber from 16-section land.
Willie Nichols 33, and his wife Amanda 29, are charged with stealing timber. The theft took place on Scarborough Road near Ovett in Jones County.The theft was brought to the attention of Jones County Superintendent of Schools, Tommy Parker and he contacted the Mississippi Forestry Commission who then reported it to the Jones County Sheriff's Department. After an investigation, the sheriff's department was able to locate the Nichol's, who admitted taking the timber.
The couple had cut nearly two-acres of timber valued at around $2000 before being caught. They were both charged with one count each of timber theft. They are facing a $5000 fine and up to five-years in prison.
A timber skidder used in the collection of the trees was also seized during the arrest.
