WARNING: Nationwide scam spreads to Pine Belt

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Nationwide scam is now spreading to Hattiesburg and otherparts of the Pine Belt.  

Local authorities are warning folks about phone fraudstersusing officer's names to get you to pay a fine.

Authorities say the scammer impersonates a local officer ordeputy - saying he or she will serve you with an arrest warrant  -- if youdon't pay the fine over the phone through a credit card.   

Police and Sheriff's Departments said they do not notify residents about arrestwarrants by phone or accept payments over the phone.

If you really do have an old fine or a citation you need topay, authorities say you should call the justice court.

    A man was killed in a mid-morning crash on S Main Street in Petal on Thursday morning. Officials tell us the crash happened just after 9 a.m. near W 5th Avenue.
