MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Investigators are releasing some details surrounding the preliminary investigation of a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger vehicle.

The collision happened Wednesday afternoon around 1:25 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 between Court Street and Perry Street.

Montgomery police and fire medics rushed to the scene of the fiery wreck but were unable to save the driver of a Chevrolet Cavalier. The name of the victim, an adult female, is being withheld until forensics can positively identify her. The 18-wheeler driver was uninjured.

A preliminary investigation shows that the woman was driving northbound on I-85 when her car entered the exit onto Court Street. For some reason, the vehicle then suddenly veered off the exit ramp, onto the grassy shoulder and then back onto the interstate.

When the car entered the outside lane of the interstate, officials say it slammed into and became wedged under the trailer of the 18-wheeler. Shortly afterward, the Chevy caught fire and burned. The flames spread to the commercial truck, which was also heavily damaged in the blaze.

Traffic along I-85 northbound was closed for hours while crews worked to clear the scene.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing, according to the Montgomery Police Department. The victim is the city's 11th traffic fatality of 2014.
