Hundreds respond to Girl Scout Cookie surplus in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Girl Scout cookie surplus in Mississippi could be ironed out soon, and we're not talking about those little iron on patches placed on Brownie vests. It's crunch time for Girl Scout branches across the state. Believe it or not, the scouts did not sell all of their cookies during the sale year, leaving thousands of those delicious treats crumbling by their lonesome.

After we aired a story on Tuesday about the surplus, it wasn't long before phones at the Hattiesburg Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi branch began ringing off the hook from folks everywhere.

"We had someone waiting outside at 8 this morning to get some cookies," Traci Spence said.

Their doors don't open until later in the morning.

The outcry for more cookies was so strong, the branch had to call in for a special shipment from Jackson.

"We're pretty excited," Spence said.

"We're very excited about it," she added.

We even caught one of our photographers at WDAM hiding behind his computer and shoveling down a sleeve of Thin Mints.

The cookies expire on September 1, so the Girl Scouts are doing what they can to make sure cookies don't go to waste. All proceeds benefit the Girl Scouts and their community service projects. The Hattiesburg branch encourages businesses to purchase large cases of cookies for $20-$24 each.
