Laurel School District kicks off week with appreciation lunch

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

The Laurel School District celebrated the start of a new school year with a teacher appreciation lunch at Life Church on Monday.

Teachers arrived in school buses and were greeted by the Laurel Tornadoes football players, cheerleaders and band.

"When we stepped off the bus and I saw those kids and I heard the music playing it made me feel like I was on the red carpet," said Laurel High School Choral Director Krista McKenzie.

Nearly 400 teachers attended the event themed "Change the World".

"The reason we do this is we get one chance, as a superintendent particularly to bring our whole family and talk about our mission, kind of set the tone for what I know is going to be a fantastic school year," said Laurel Superintendent Chuck Benigno.

Although school doesn't officially begin until Wednesday, teacherS say they are ready.

"I'm ready to get back to the school so I can see my kids again," said Laurel High School Girl's Head Basketball Coach and History teacher Darius Walker. "I'm excited about Wednesday, looking forward to it."
