The Texas Tech football season is just around the corner.

On Monday, the Red Raiders began the first of 23 practices leading up to the season opener on Aug. 30 against Central Arkansas.

Not much can be read into one day of practice, but the coaches were pleased with the progress from spring to now.

"It was good. Spirited. Moved around pretty good," Coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "You can tell meeting with them in the summer really helped - little farther along than we were. The young guys knew a little more than they had in the past. Good energy. Got to clean things up, but not a bad first day."

John Scott Jr., the Red Raiders defensive line coach, is excited about the potential of his revamped unit. The line leans heavily on Junior College transfers but has caught the attention of players and coaches alike because of the sheer size the line now possesses. But with new players always comes a learning curve and conditioning will be an area of focus.

"Got to get used to running to the football after every snap, no matter if we get gassed or not," Scott Jr. said. "Our guys were stressed a lot, with the offense moving so fast. We got to do a better job of getting the call, getting lined up and getting the assignment and then sprinting back to the ball. Got a long way to go but good thing is we have a while to go."
