Witness recalls scene of crash that killed toddler

Elizabeth Constancio Elizabeth Constancio
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

It was around 2 p.m. Saturday, near 23rd street and Avenue J, that police say 2-year-old Mikaly Leyva was hit and run over by an SUV. She was taken to UMC where she later died.

Police say the car was driven by a 14-year-old with two 8-year-old passengers inside at the time of the crash.

Elizabeth Constancio saw the immediate aftermath.

"I saw a little girl lifeless on that street, blood everywhere; it was really terrifying seeing that little girl in the street," she said.

Constancio was on her way to the flea market to eat with her family.

"I was thinking what if it was my child. My heart just dropped, fell completely and I was wondering where the mother was. Why was the girl crossing the street by herself?" she said. "I just cried, I pray for the family but the last two days it’s been heavy on my mind and my heart."

She says the image of Mikaly lying on the street has been on her mind for the past two days. She visited the memorial with her family on Monday to pay her respects. She hopes God will comfort them in this time of pain.

"My heart goes out to the family, prayers go out to the family, I just ask Jesus to be with them, ease that pain. I mean no one can understand what that mother is going through," she said. "I just pray to God that he covers their heart and eases their pain. I just pray for the family."

Lubbock police are continuing their investigation and say no charges will be brought against anyone involved until after that is complete.
