Woman regaining strength after being robbed of belongings, privacy

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A woman whose name is being withheld for the sake of privacy is recovering after she was allegedly sexually assaulted and robbed early Monday morning.

The recent Southern Miss grad woke up to the sound of someone breaking into her room at an apartment complex off N 32nd Ave. near the McDonald's off Hardy St.

She says he began taking her things, and that he tried to sexually assault her in the process, but she pretended to be asleep. He took her phone before she could dial 911. She said she was afraid the alleged perpetrator had a gun, and her roommate was upstairs, so she stayed quiet.

When she thought he was gone for good, she ran and locked herself in her bathroom. When he was finally gone, she dialed 911 on her roommates' phone.

The alleged thief took her MacBook, credit cards, and even her white 2004 PT Cruiser. The victim said she's upset because she planned on driving her car to Florida where she will earn her P.h.D. in a few weeks, but added that she's just happy to be alive.

She was treated at a local hospital and says tests came back normal. The roommates say they feel like they were watched before the incident took place, because they're the only two women who live alone in the complex. They are now moving out. The thief is at large, and the Hattiesburg Police Department is investigating the incident.
