Portland, Maine Ranks as Second Most Expensive Destination in the USA

PORTLAND, Maine, Aug. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Portland, the largest city in the state of Maine, is the second most expensive summer destination in the United States. That's according to the latest survey from CheapHotels.org, which compared destinations throughout the USA and Canada based on the cost of their lodging.

With an average rate of $276 per night for the cheapest available double room, Portland takes the number two spot on the rankings list. Only the island of Nantucket, located south of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, is more expensive. There a couple will have to spend, on average, $301 per night for a similar room this August.

Another two destinations in Maine are listed among the Top 10: Kennebunkport and Ogunquit. Popular summer resort towns located in York County, they rank sixth and tenth most expensive in the United States, with average overnight rates of $231 and $214 respectively.
