LEU BISCAYNE, FL (WSVN/CNN) - The U.S. Coast Guard rescued six people clinging to makeshift rafts near the Florida coast.

Coast Guard officials found the six men near Key Biscayne, close to Miami.

Their rafts were crudely assembled from foam, plywood, a blue tarp and other debris.

Authorities believe the men are migrants, likely from Cuba or elsewhere in Latin America.

"They're being evaluated and questioned, but again, they appear to be in good condition. If it turns out that they are migrants, in accordance with U.S. policy, any migrants interdicted at sea will be promptly returned to their country of origin," said Lt. Cmdr. Gabe Somma, U.S. Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officers say they have seen an increase in migrant rescues off American shores.
